Dale Kruger grew up outside Lerna and spent nine seasons on a line-clearance crew across Coles, Cumberland and Douglas counties before starting Coles County Tree Co. in 2014. So every tree comes down in pieces, the rigging goes up first, and nobody guesses what's on the other side of the drop.
On flat Grand Prairie ground, the big trees are the ones somebody planted or spared: bur and white oaks in older yards, silver maple windbreaks, cottonwood and sycamore along the Embarras River. Wet spring soil lets top-heavy trees lean, and the emerald ash borer has left dead ash standing over roofs across the county.
