Kansas, IL: Tree Work Where IL-16 Meets IL-49

Kansas is a village of about 670 people in southwestern Edgar County, Illinois, at IL-16 and IL-49, just past the Coles line and about fourteen miles and twenty-some minutes east of our shop. Its post office has carried the Kansas Territory's name since 1855, and it's where our IL-16 run turns onto IL-49 for Westfield and Casey.

The ground is the same deep, flat Grand Prairie silt loam as Coles County, farmed to the village limits, so nearly every tree was planted on purpose: silver and sugar maples on house lots, redcedar and hackberry windbreaks, a bur oak or two from the old groves. Nobody planted the dead ash the borer left, and that's most of what we remove here.
