Loxa is an unincorporated Coles County community just north of IL-16, halfway between Charleston and Mattoon and about six miles and ten minutes from our shop, the shortest drive on our list. IL-16 is the county's only east-west surface route, tying Eastern Illinois University to I-57, and Loxa Road meets it amid corn and soybeans at about 673 feet. One guess says the name came from a town in Spain.

The trees are farmstead groves of sugar maple, silver maple and bur oak planted a century ago to break the wind, hackberry along the ditches, and ash the emerald ash borer has finished off. When a wet spring softens the silt loam and a straight-line wind comes from the west, those old maples go over first.
