Ashmore is a village of about 637 people on IL-16 in eastern Coles County, Illinois, around nine miles and fifteen minutes east of our shop. It's named for Hezekiah Ashmore and incorporated in 1867. The township runs from the Embarras River to the Edgar County line, flat prairie drained by the Pole Cat on its way west to the river.

Landmarks include the old Coles County Poor Farm almshouse, now Ashmore Estates, and the 62-foot Lincoln statue that went up in Charleston in 1969 and was later moved here. The trees are the Grand Prairie mix: silver and sugar maple over village lots, redcedar fencerows, cottonwood and sycamore in the draws, and dead ash on most farmsteads. Ashmore sits in Charleston's school district.
