Mattoon, IL: Tree Work in the Twin City

Mattoon, Illinois is the bigger twin city, about 16,870 people where IL-16 meets US-45 and I-57 runs along the east edge, some eleven miles and under twenty minutes west of our shop. Two railroads made it: Illinois Central and Terre Haute and Alton surveyors fixed the junction in 1854, the first train came in June 1855, and the town took the name of the Terre Haute line's construction engineer.

South of town the city dammed the Little Wabash for Lake Mattoon, with Lake Paradise nearby. That means two kinds of work: old blocks of silver maple, sugar maple and red oak over close-set houses, alleys and lines, and lake lots where cottonwood, sycamore and dead ash stand on soft ground.
