Westfield, IL: Tree Work Over the Clark Line

Westfield is a village of about 536 people in western Clark County, Illinois, just over the Coles line and around thirteen miles and twenty-five minutes east of our shop. Laid out in 1839, with a post office in 1840 and incorporation in 1875, it's best known for Westfield College: a United Brethren seminary from 1861, chartered as a college in 1865, closed in 1914, and burned in 1917.

The North Fork of the Embarras and Hurricane Creek drain this corner of Clark County, so flat prairie breaks into timbered draws of white oak, red oak, shagbark hickory and black walnut, with sycamore on the creek bottoms. Village lots hold sugar and silver maples from the college years, and dead ash lines fencerows all the way to Casey.
