Oakland, Illinois is a city of about 739 people in northeast Coles County, where the Embarras River forms the township's west line, about seventeen road miles and thirty-five minutes from our shop. Platted in 1833 as Independence, it became Oakland when the post office moved in 1855. Dr. Hiram Rutherford, pioneer doctor and abolitionist, set up practice here in 1840; his home and office still open for tours, and the 1847 Matson slave case that grew out of Oakland put Abraham Lincoln on the losing side.

It's also the closest town to Walnut Point State Park, whose Upper Embarras Woods hold oak, hickory, maple and walnut like the old river timber. In town that means big oaks and sugar maples over old houses; along the river, cottonwood, sycamore and hackberry on soft bottom ground.
