Toledo, Illinois is the Cumberland County seat, a town of about 1,161 people at the county's center on IL-121, roughly twenty-five road miles and forty minutes from our shop by way of Mattoon. The county was split from Coles in 1843 and named for the Cumberland Road. Its 1888 courthouse, with a clock tower, arched entrances and balconies, has been on the National Register since 1981 and still anchors the square.

South of the Coles line the prairie breaks more into timbered draws, so Toledo trees run to white oak, red oak, shagbark hickory and black walnut on the slopes, sugar and silver maple on town lots, and dead ash in every fencerow.
